While the excitement of that first session is hard to beat, a bit of preparation ahead of time goes a long way toward ensuring that the experience is both enjoyable and safe.
Whether you’re new to performance driving or have years of track experience, taking time to prepare your vehicle, equipment, and personal gear will help you get the most out of your time behind the wheel.
Driver Safety Gear
One of the simplest ways to prepare for track driving is ensuring you have the appropriate safety equipment. All drivers will be required to use a helmet carrying a Snell SA2010, M2010, or newer rating (such as SA2015 or SA2020). A properly fitted helmet designed for motorsports use is the most important piece of safety equipment you will bring to the circuit.
Additional gear such as driving gloves and proper driving shoes will be optional, though many drivers choose to use them as they can improve both comfort and control during longer sessions.
As you begin thinking through your equipment needs, and if you don’t already have a trusted source, starting with a local race shop can be a helpful first step. Shops like Capaldi Racing and 2to4 Wheels are examples of Michigan-based resources that can assist with helmet selection, and other gear considerations.
Preparing Your Vehicle
A well-prepared car is one of the most important parts of a successful track day. Before bringing a vehicle to the circuit, members should ensure their car has been recently inspected and is in strong mechanical condition. Particular attention should be given to braking systems, tire condition, and fluid levels, as these components experience the greatest stress during performance driving.
Even vehicles that perform flawlessly on the road can experience different demands on track, where sustained braking, acceleration, and cornering loads are significantly higher.
Track-Day Logistics
Preparation also extends beyond the car itself. Drivers often find it helpful to think ahead about what they may need during the day. Basic tools, tire pressure gauges, and simple spare supplies can make small adjustments between sessions much easier.
Equally important is personal preparation. Staying hydrated, taking time to rest between sessions, and approaching each run with focus and patience will help drivers stay sharp throughout the day.
Insurance & Planning Ahead
Many members also choose to explore track day insurance, which can provide protection for their vehicles while participating in driving events. While these policies vary, they can offer an added layer of peace of mind when bringing valuable vehicles onto the circuit.
A Thoughtful Approach to Driving
One of the most rewarding parts of performance driving is the opportunity to improve over time. Preparing your car, gear, and personal approach ahead of the season allows you to focus on the most important part of the experience—learning the circuit and enjoying time behind the wheel.
As we approach the 2026 season, we encourage members to begin thinking about how they would like to prepare for their first sessions on the South Circuit. A bit of preparation today will help ensure that your first laps are as enjoyable as they are memorable.
