Local Racing History
Long before Motorsports Gateway Howell began shaping the future of motorsports in Livingston County, the community had already experienced the thrill of racing through Quarter Midget competitions. These scaled-down versions of full-size midget race cars, driven by young aspiring racers, introduced local youth to the adrenaline of motorsport.
The Spirit of Quarter Midget Racing
In the 1950’s, Quarter Midget racing gained momentum in Howell, drawing in families and enthusiasts to witness these exciting events. It was a time when motorsports were flourishing in small towns across the nation, with Howell emerging as one of the notable spots for this growing sport. Thanks to the help of the Howell Carnegie District Library, we’ve uncovered historical articles from 1956 and 1957 that capture the spirit of Quarter Midget racing just north of where Motorsports Gateway now stands. These stories highlight the vibrant motorsports culture that has long been part of Howell's heritage.
