GM to Enter Formula 1 in 2028 Season

In a groundbreaking move that echoes with the legacy of innovation, General Motors (GM) has officially registered with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) as a Formula 1 power unit manufacturer. The announcement signifies GM's strategic leap into the pinnacle of motorsports, set to commence with the 2028 season.

The New Powerhouse

GM President Mark Reuss expressed excitement about the venture, revealing that GM's new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be propelled by a GM power unit. This move positions Andretti Cadillac as a formidable works team, ready to compete at the highest echelons of Formula 1.

Reuss stated, “With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team. We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world.”

Andretti Cadillac Gears Up

The momentum had been building. Last month, the FIA greenlit Andretti’s Expression of Interest application, officially paving the way for Andretti Cadillac to join the illustrious lineup of the FIA Formula One World Championship. The partnership between Andretti and Cadillac, backed by GM's powerhouse of technological prowess, promises an exciting chapter in Formula 1.

GM's Technological Odyssey

GM’s foray into Formula 1 isn’t merely a race; it’s a technological odyssey. The company has already initiated the development and testing of prototype technology, heralding advancements in electrification, hybrid technology, sustainable fuels, high-efficiency internal combustion engines, and cutting-edge controls and software systems.

For over a century, racing has served as a crucible for GM and Cadillac, where knowledge and technology seamlessly transfer between the high-speed world of race cars and the production vehicles that grace our roads. Cadillac’s V-Series performance portfolio, celebrating its 20th anniversary, is a testament to this transfer of insights from the track to the road.

Cadillac's Triumphs on the Track

Cadillac, with its storied history of racing success, has recently celebrated triumphs with the 5.5L DOHC V-8 powertrain in the 2023 IMSA and WEC seasons. Securing a podium finish at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans and sweeping top championship honors in the inaugural IMSA Grand Touring Prototype season, Cadillac Racing continues to be a force to be reckoned with on the global racing stage.

As GM charges into the dynamic world of Formula 1, it not only embraces the thrill of competition but also reinforces its commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive technology. The roar of GM-powered engines will soon resonate across Formula 1 circuits, marking the beginning of an exciting chapter in the history of motorsports.
